Our History

The early history of technical education at Lyndon Institute and St. Johnsbury Academy is one of separate but equal paths. In the case of L.I. the initial inspiration, time and support came from Theodore N. Vail, co-founder of AT&T. The St. Johnsbury Trade School evolved into Streeter Hall as the home for technical education at the Academy. With the creation of regional tech centers the programs moved closer together as they shared students to avoid program redundancy and the high cost of maintaining specialized facilities.

The St. Johnsbury-Lyndon region has long been the economic hub of the Northeast Kingdom and is home to more than 20 businesses each employing over 100 people, 4 with each over 250 employees. Some of these businesses, such as Fairbanks Scales and Kennametal, are an integral part of the region’s history, while others, like Weidemann Systems International, NSA, and Vt. Aerospace, are relative newcomers to this area. Strong, sustainable economic growth is of key importance to the nearly 30,000 residents of the Region that stretches from Newark in the north, south to Ryegate, east to Lunenburg, and west to Cabot. This area of Vermont has a history of a dedicated and talented workforce.

Educating, retaining, and maintaining a skilled workforce is imperative to the economic health of our region.  We are proud to have been providing technical education and training to adults in St. Johnsbury, Lyndon, and surrounding areas for over 30 years. Whether the education and training is specifically tailored to business or industry, or is a course for individuals to learn new or upgrade skills, the opportunity for employment or advancement is enhanced.  These programs are designed to provide the training that meets the ever changing business environment and the technological changes that are associated with business and every day life.

We invite you look at our course offerings to find the program, on-line or at one of our campuses, that best meets your needs.  Please contact us if we are able to provide additional information or if we may assist with development of program specific to your needs.
