Observational Astronomy
In this course, you will learn how to find objects in the night sky at any time of the year: constellations, major stars, planets, the moon, deep sky objects, and meteor showers - as well as being exposed to an introduction of these classes of celestial bodies. We will discuss how to find and observe these objects using various tools: star charts, naked-eye techniques, binoculars, and different types and sizes of telescopes. When the weather is clear, we will head out of the classroom and make observations. If it's cloudy, we will use night sky simulations and presentations instead. Finally, we will discuss the links between observational astronomy and topics in modern cosmology - how/when did the universe begin, and what is its ultimate fate?" The autumn months are prime time to enjoy the wondrous spectacle of Vermont's clear skies unhampered by light pollution...please join us! ![]()
